Toxic Metals in Baby Food

A recent report indicated that both bought and prepared baby food contains levels of heavy metals that may be toxic to a developing brain.

Humans have evolved in the presence of toxic metals. They are natural parts of the earth and our bodies know how to get rid of these toxins. Problems occur when individuals have inefficiencies in their detoxification pathways, when levels of toxins are concentrated well above natural levels, and when the exposures occur at critical times in development – for example during infancy and early childhood when the brain is at its most sensitive developmental stage.

Individuals whose children may have trouble with detoxification are those who are very sensitive to medications and chemicals, who experience a lot of medication side effects, or potential those who have challenges with Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, or long term infections.

Circumstances when toxins are concentrated beyond natural levels include foodstuff that has been treated with pesticides or herbicides, areas in and around cities or industrial areas, households that have smokers, moms who were/are smokers, old houses with lead paint, diets rich in fish, and diets rich in cereals. The latter is of particular importance in infancy. Cereals naturally detoxify the environment of heavy metals. They efficiently remove metals from soil. Soils that have been treated heavily with pesticides and herbicides or which were in previously industrial areas will have higher levels of toxic metals. These types of soils are prolific across the Nation.

Using cereals, fruit juices, berries, seeds, and leafy vegetables in moderation in your child’s diet will help minimize the exposure to toxic metals. Using organic produce from fields whose soils are tested also helps. It is important that water coming from old houses be filtered to reduce the overall contaminant load. Prevent children from eating dirt in industrial areas or older parts of cities. And if you or your family happens to have the telltale signs of detoxification inefficiency, you might consider getting mom and dad tested. Infants with potential detoxification challenges need to be particularly careful to minimize toxic loads from the diet and the general environment.
