Spring Cleaning: Cleanse Your Environment
by Henri Roca, MD, Clinical Functional Medicine Specialist
The sun is returning and the flowers are blooming. The long 'retreat' of winter is drawing to a close. We have re-evaluated our purpose and meaning, our health journey, relationships, family dynamics, friendships, and professional life during these long nights.
Now, these reflections become our guiding principles as we emerge into the light of spring.
What Is An Environmental Detox?
Detoxing your body is a familiar concept, but have you ever considered detoxing your environment? This is an essential part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It involves a deep cleaning of your space, taking into consideration not just the visible dirt, but also the invisible pollutants that can negatively affect your health. So, let's delve into how you can cleanse your environment to live a healthier life.
The Retox Effect
It's important to be aware of the 'retox' effect - the process of reabsorbing harmful substances back into your body. This can happen when you inhale insect parts, mold spores, or old dander from pets and people. If you are sensitive, you might need to wear a respirator during cleaning to avoid triggering Mast Cell Activation Syndrome or causing similar problems.
Cleansing Your Home
Consider cleaning leaf litter away from the outside of your house, especially near windows, doors, and central air units. This reduces the risk of inhaling mold spores and mycotoxins, which can pose serious health risks.
Carpets and rugs are often overlooked during cleaning. However, they can harbor mold spores, mycotoxins, and dander. It would be best to replace old and dusty carpets and rugs or have them steam cleaned and thoroughly dried.
Decluttering your space is another effective way to detox your environment. Creating clear and open spaces can invite positivity, create room for community building, promote productivity and encourage self-reflection. However, decluttering can also lead to negative thoughts and feelings, especially if you find it challenging to let go of certain items. Remember, some of these items may contain mold that can affect your health.
Kitchen Cleanse
In your kitchen, consider removing all plastic containers. Food stored in these containers can absorb harmful chemicals, especially when reheated in the microwave.
Also, consider removing all petrochemical-based personal care products, especially those that contain parabens and phthalates. These chemicals can disrupt normal hormone and nervous system functions.
Don't forget to clean out your refrigerator or freezer. Regulations allow all food to contain small amounts of insect parts and eggs, mold spores, and bacteria. Leaving food for more than 2 or 3 days allows these organisms to grow, potentially impacting your gut health and overall wellbeing.
Overview
Environmental detox is a holistic approach to health that goes beyond just cleaning your space. It involves taking measures to reduce exposure to harmful substances that can adversely affect your health. If you find yourself retoxing, it's advisable to consult with a functional medicine provider. Embrace these practices and create a healthier environment for you and your loved ones.
