Science-based Holistic Care for Three Generations of Family Members

Children, Parents, Grandparents. They all have different health needs, and yet there is a common thread in the approach to achieving optimum health regardless of a person’s age.

Henri Roca, MD, is a board-certified family physician dedicated to the principles of holistic medicine. The goal is to help every member of your family feel as well as possible.

Using the most appropriate combinations of conventional medicine and healing therapies, Dr. Roca takes a Functional Medicine approach that allows time to explore a patient’s full history in order to find the root causes of dis-ease. This may be related to physical, mental or emotional function. The effects of stress, hormonal changes, aging bodies, genetics, environmental toxins, allergies, inflammation, sleep, nutritional choices and other lifestyle factors are all taken into account.

Questions and Answers about Dr. Roca’s approach to medicine

What exactly is Integrative Medicine?
In simplest terms, integrative medicine combines many practices of modern Western medicine with principles of centuries-old Eastern healing therapies. The underlying philosophy is that, when given a chance, the body will draw from its innate power to heal itself. At the same time, when state-of-the-art medical technologies and intervention are necessary for the health of a patient, procedures and medications are welcome and encouraged. Sometimes referred to as complementary medicine, integrative principles and practices are often delivered alongside medical treatments for cancer, advanced heart disease and chronic conditions that cannot be otherwise treated.

I’ve heard Dr. Roca say it’s possible to reverse chronic disease. How?
It is essential to identify the root cause of a problem or dis-ease. In many cases, there are lifestyle choices that need to be changed in order for healing to occur. Diet, exercise, environmental toxins, skeletal alignment and posture, stress, hormones, allergies, and several other factors influence a person’s health. It requires a commitment and, many times, can be effective in reversing or decelerating the damage.

What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine is an approach to wellness based on understanding a person’s entire medical history in order to balance the basic functions of the body and reduce symptoms of chronic disease. It recognizes that every biological process affects every other biological process. Inflammation, digestion, neurotransmitter balance, immune function, and mental and emotional experiences are all interconnected. In order to understand the causes of illness, we must understand the individual’s history and interactions between that person’s biological systems.

With so many people running to specialists, what ever happened to the good ‘ole family doctor?
There is a need for specialists who are highly skilled in specific medical diagnostics and procedures. However, most families can be well served most of the time by their family physician who sees members of families on an ongoing basis. This allows a doctor to get an understanding for the “whole” person and the impact of that person’s genetics, environment and family habits on their overall health.

Henri Roca, MD, is a board-certified family physician dedicated to the principles of holistic medicine. In addition to being board-certified by the American Academy of Family Practice and the American Board of Holistic and Integrative Medicine, Dr. Roca serves on the board of directors for the American Holistic Medical Association and as co-chair for the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine’s Education Working Group. Dr. Roca is on the clinical faculty of Yale University School of Medicine and Louisiana State University School of Medicine, where he founded LSU’s Integrative Medicine section.

How is Dr. Roca’s medical practice different than most others?
Dr. Roca is both a board-certified medical doctor and a holistic practitioner. In addition to providing comprehensive conventional care, Dr. Roca is a medical acupuncturist, hypnotherapist, massage therapist and biofeedback practitioner. He is skilled in the use of vitamins, botanicals and supplements.

If you are a member of the sandwich generation, you may be caring for both your children and your parents. You probably don’t want your child to be on medications that may be unnecessary, but your mom or dad may need prescription medications to improve the quality of life in later years. Dr. Roca takes the time to evaluate every patient in order to guide him or her down the best road for their individual health needs.

Dr. Roca has been the primary choice for three generations of family members (moms, dads, children and grandparents) who prefer a natural approach to managing their health, with the security that their physician is credentialed and experienced in conventional medicine as well.

In the words of one patient:
“After many years of searching for a doctor who could get to the cause of my symptoms and not just deal with the symptoms, Dr. Roca was able to identify the basic medical issues and is helping me take a holistic approach to dealing with them. His work has helped me tremendously, and I would recommend him highly to anyone looking for an integrative, holistic, medical, scientific approach to his or her healthcare.”
